How did it all begin?#

In the autumn of 2022, we decided to start breeding alpaca llamas. We began looking around, reading specialized literature, following various discussion forums on social networks, reading interviews on the internet, and so on. In the Czech Republic, no special permits or registration are required for breeding llamas, so we focused on considering what kind of animals we wanted to keep and for what purpose. We also researched what these (for our conditions, somewhat exotic) animals need for successful breeding. In the end, we decided to start with two young female alpacas.
Together with my husband, we took the plunge and in February 2023, we brought home Růženka and Běluška, two young alpaca llamas, Růženka and Běluška. The veterinarian examined them to assess their health condition and took stool samples to check for possible parasites. Everything was fine, so we could start with their adaptation. The alpacas were initially frightened and stuck together constantly. It was immediately clear that they had established a clear hierarchy between them. Růženka took on the role of protector and herd lookout, while Běluška was submissive and carefree from the start. It took about a month before they were willing to take a treat from my hand.

In December 2023, another little girl joined our herd. We named her Julie Julie and until recently, she was grazing on the Alpine hills. Růženka maintains her role as the herd leader, and the newcomer is slowly getting used to her surroundings. We will see how long her adaptation will take. We will start lead training as soon as possible, but first, it’s important to let her calmly adjust to her new environment. We also need to gradually get to know her character and personality so we can meet her needs.

May 2024 – Jůlinka is still a bit cautious, but she faithfully accompanies her two herd companions at all shared events. She is slowly starting to take treats from the hand, but still keeps a bit of distance.

Socialization #

From the very beginning, we knew that we didn’t want to keep these amazing creatures just for ourselves, so as soon as the girls settled in a bit, we started the process of socialization. We have two Border Collies – Besinka and Ema – so we introduced them right from the start. There were fears on both sides, but we took it slowly and maintained a safe distance.
During the very first week, I started putting halters on the alpacas and speaking to them in a calm, quiet voice. This was followed by a short walk on a lead with both of them together. I included walks almost daily, gradually extending both the time and the route. From time to time, we encountered a car, a bicycle, or a stroller. Alpacas are very curious, and every new stimulus was a surprise for them. When we met people during our first outings, we let them approach and get to know our alpacas. I found that alpacas like children—probably because they are comfortable with the child’s size and the little hands that touch them timidly.
Růženka and Běluška quickly adapted to their new environment and to our other animals. Since I have worked my whole life in the health and social field and am involved in psychotherapy, it was a clear choice for me to use our alpacas as therapy llamas.
